Influencing Potato Responses Using Hydrogen Peroxide
Materials
- Raw potato half
- Boiled potato half
- Frozen potato half
- Knife (for chopping potatoes)
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Graduated Cylinder
- Paper Towel
- Sharpie
- Ruler
- Gather materials
- With the knife, cut each potato half into fourths, keep in mind that they should all be equal in size and contain the same amount of skin.
- Place a fourth of raw potato, boiled potato, and frozen potato on each of the four pieces of paper towel
- Label each paper towel 1, 2, 3, and 4. Next to each potato label A—raw potato, B—boiled potato, C—frozen potato.
- Observe the color of each potato in it's current state.
- Pour 5mL of Hydrogen Peroxide on potato 1A. Start timer. Stop timer when visible reaction from Hydrogen Peroxide has occurred.
- Record any color changes.
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 with potato B and C on paper towel 1.
- Pour 10mL of Hydrogen Peroxide on potato 2A. Start timer. Stop timer when visible reaction from Hydrogen Peroxide has occurred.
- Record any color changes.
- Repeat steps 9 and 10 with potato B and C on paper towel 2.
- Pour 15mL of Hydrogen Peroxide on potato 3A. Start timer. Stop timer when visible reaction from Hydrogen Peroxide has occurred.
- Record any color changes.
- Repeat steps 12 and 13 with potato B and C on paper towel 3.
- Pour 20mL of Hydrogen Peroxide on potato 4A. Start timer. Stop timer when visible reaction from Hydrogen Peroxide has occurred.
- Record any color changes.
- Repeat steps 16 and 17 with potato B and C on paper towel 4.
- Clean/dispose of supplies in an efficient and timely manner.
